SIMONDS CUP REPORT - Round 1
Nov 28 2005
Riley C and Riley A did battle for a place in the Quarter Finals of the Simonds Cup, with the match eventually decided on aggregate. John Butcher put the A side 2-0 up with a 76-38, 73-45 win over James Stone. Butcher made a break of 36 in the opening frame and then 38 in the next. Chris Stone beat Gary Cowlin 71-23, 69-46 to level the match at 2-2 and swing the aggregate advantage 5 points in the C team’s favour. With all still to play for Andy MacBryan and Ron Reddy did battle. The fifth frame went the way of the C team, MacBryan winning 77-54 to make it 3-2 and leave Reddy the task of winning the last frame by at least 29 points. Reddy set to his task well and a break of 38 knocked the stuffing from MacBryan and Reddy took the frame 83-7.

Gavin Wright and Justin Buckingham steered Witney A to victory over Cherwell A. Wright made a break of 57 in the opening frame which he won 108-1. The second frame was slightly less one sided, Wright winning 82-40. Ray Benwell did his best to restrict Justin Buckingham, but eventually went down 68 –25 (45 break), 65-20. With Witney’s Quarter Final place now assured Chris Warren and Andy Benwell played out the remaining frames, with Benwell taking them 82-9 (32 break), 61-37 to salvage some pride for Cherwell.

Abingdon RBL A cruised into the last eight at the expense of Ashton A. Kevin Broughton opened the scoring for Abingdon with a 77-49 win over Pete Fenn, but the advantage was short lived with Fenn taking the second frame 77-42. Fred Brett edged Tony Sullivan 49-44 in the third frame before going on to win the fourth 70-27. With Abingdon now 3-1 ahead, Terry Chambers needed to win the last two frames by more than 43 points win the match for Ashton on aggregate. However, the maths proved irrelevant as Bill Cook took the fifth frame by a single point 38-37 to give Abingdon a deserved victory. The final frame wasn’t played.

Premier Division leaders County A, brushed aside the challenge of division two side Riley D. James Thorpe took the first two frames 89-19 (41 break), 94-20 from Robert Adkins. Richard Tatton then spared Greg Moyses no mercy, winning the third frame 121-0 (break 54) and the fourth 111-7. Anthony Roberts put up a fight in the final two frames, but Jimmy Ewers proved too strong and ran out the winner 49-41, 70-52.

Fieldside A also progressed with comparative ease, but only after Bob Chivers had been given a run for his money by Richard Partlett. Both frames were close, with Chivers taking the first 53-47 and Partlett the second 52-45. Karl Walker made a break of 55 on his way to a 94-25 win against Lawrence Parsons in the third frame and steadied the ship further with a 74-22 win in the fourth frame. Paul Robinson completed Fieldside’s victory against Bob Thiele 106-14, 73-41
