CUP REPORT
Nov 12 2005
Cup action returned with the first matches in the Jubilee Cup and the aggregately scored, Bint and New Team Cups.

The Jubilee Cup reverted to a straight knockout and with only the four Premier Division sides eligible to compete, this meant the competition started at the Semi Final stage.

Fieldside A had few problems against Riley A to book their place in the final of the competition. Karl Walker beat John Butcher 79-17, 76-37 before Tony Hicks beat Bob Chivers 76-29 in frame three to make it 2-1. Chivers replied 80-24 in the next frame to restore Fieldside's 2 frame advantage. Gary Cowlin then edged out Paul Robinson in a low scoring fifth frame 42-28, before Robinson took the final frame 62-53 to seal the match 4:2 in favour of the home side.

In the other Semi Final, County A beat their arch rivals Thame A 4-2 and will now meet Fieldside A in the Jubilee Cup Final on December 19th. Michael Bennett had no answer to Olly Hoeblyn who took the opening frames 91-28, 67-36. The match was over as a contest after Richard Tatton secured a 76-22, 77-36 win against Dave Feore. Although the match was over as a contest, Martin Cone and Jimmy Ewers played out the last two frames, with Cone taking the honours.

In the Bint Cup, Cherwell B (Div 3) put their poor league form to one side to record a magnificent victory against Thame B (Div 2). Peter Astall Cherwell off to a flying start with a 75-49, 66-36 win against Tom Fletcher. Dave White had no answer to Mark Clifford, the Cherwell player taking the 3rd and 4th frames 66-51, 74-31 to make in 2-0 on points and an astonishing 114 ahead on aggregate. Nigel Bossom faired no better in the 5th frame, losing 58-45 to Mick Lomas. At 127 behind on aggregate going into the final frame Bossom had no realistic chance of overturning the deficit. With the pressure now well and truly off, Bossom managed a break of 34 and secured the frame 69-19 to salvage a consolation point for Thame.

Cherwell A (Div 1) emulated their B side to progress at the expense of Riley E (Div 3). The match was closer than the 5:0 scoreline suggests. Andy Benwell had few problems against Joe Zhao in the opening frame, winning it 81-32. Zhao came back into things in frame 2 and was leading 42-25 before Benwell made a 31 clearance to steal the frame 56-42. Kelvin Cheng made John Allen fight for the third frame which was decide on the black 62-54 in Allen's favour. Allen then took the 4th frame 79-29. The remaining two frames between frames Ray Benwell and David Lo both went to the black, with Benwell taking them both, 47-41, 66-55.

Witney C (Div 2) had little difficulty in their match with Morris Motors A (Div 3). However, it was the Motormen who took an early lead, when Doug Baker took the first rame 68-63 from Colin Cutler. Cutler hit back to take the second frame 54-13 and the first aggregate point. Lewis Calcutt made a break of 41 during his 100-20, 94-17 demolition of Des Truss, with Paul Chester completing a 5:0 win 52-37, 69-31 against Tony Baker.

Riley C cruised through to round 2 with a comfortable win against Ashton A. James Stone set Riley on their way, beating Alan King 72-72, 63-22 to secure the first point. Pete Fenn took the third frame from Chris Stone 73-47, but Stone replied 82-25 and take the second point on aggregate. Andy MacBryan beat Terry Chambers 75-52 in the fifth frame and although Chambers came back to win the final frame 52-44, his margin of victory was insufficient to deny Riley's the 2 bonus points for overall aggregate and a 5-0 win.

House Club B travelled to fellow Division Two side Abingdon RBL A and came away with a 5-0 win. The first four frames were see-saw affairs with the Abingdon players going in front only for their margins of victory to be overhauled by their House club counterparts. Bill Cook took the first frame 53-43, but Keith Philpott replied to take the second 59-33. Fred Brett then won frame three 51-39, with Paul Larkins replying to take the fourth frame 49-36 to nick the aggregate by a single point. Mike Augar rounded things off with an 88-32, 67-37 win against John Dawson.

Cowley Con C (Div 3) came close to causing an upset against New Club A (Div 1)but ended up losing courtesy of the aggregate scoring rules. Jim Smart Jnr defeated Alan Mander by an aggregate of 4 points to put Cowley 1-0 ahead before Ian Gee levelled matters with a 150-43 aggregate win against Jim Smart Snr to swing the aggregate 103 points in New Club's favour. Mark Bayliss made a break of 32 to help him beat Justin Shepherd 117-87, but it was not enough to overturn the deficit and New Club picked up the 2 bonus points for a 3-2 win.

Oracle C (Div 3) carried their good league form over into the Bint Cup to defeat Eynsham A (Div 2) 4:1. Simon Saunders had few problems against Lawrence Parsons and made breaks of 11,13 and 17 to take the first frame 72-32 and breaks of 12, 20 and 17 to win the second frame 75-22. Richard Saunders had similar success against Kevin Truby, winning 63-46, 54-23 with breaks of 12, 17 and 20 in their first frame and 12 & 13 in their second. Richard Partlett out scored Jamie Saczak on aggregate 80-40, 43-58 to win Eynsham's only point.

Elsewhere, Thame D collected a 5-0 win against Cowley Con B and Woodstock A beat Witney B 4-1. There were also two walkovers with Oracle claiming the game against Riley D and Cowley Con A progressing thanks to Thame C’s withdrawal (see note below).

The New Team Cup had just three preliminary round matches scheduled. Littlemore RBL A eased to a 4:1 win against fellow division four side Morris Motors C. Lee McAllister beat Roger Tomlin by 90 points to put Littlemore in a strong position and although James Griffin then beat McAully McAllister to level the match he had only reduced the arrears by 14 points. Darren Murray beat Bob Hayward by 49 points over the last two frames to book Littlemore's passage into Round 1 proper.

Division Four side, County C made the most of their higher league status to outclass Westcott A from Division Five. Paul Paddick beat Brian Hawes, with Kevin Hicks and Nick Anderson enjoying similar success against Dave Moon and Andy Huxley respectively. County won 5:0. At the time of writing, the result between Eynsham D and Ashton B was still awaited.
