WEEK 4 LEAGUE REPORT
Oct 3 2005
Grant Conquest made short work of his frames during Witney A's match with Division One leaders Riley B. Conquest took on Gary Bough and made breaks of 48 & 46 to win the first frame. He then went on to take the second in style, increasing the highest break for a first division team to 90 in the process. Malcolm Bough then beat Phil Smith to bring Riley's level. Justin Buckingham got the better of Dave Bough in the final two frames to secure the match for Witney. Mick Bennett increased the highest break for a Premier Division team to 60 during Thame A's match against Oracle A. The break was enough to ensure Bennett won the opening frame, but opponent Vince Taylor, hit back to make it 1-1. Dave Noake then put Oracle ahead, winning both frames against Dave Feore. Martin Cone was made to fight by Ben Dudman, but came through the test to win by 8 points in frame 5 and by 24 in the last to secure a draw for Thame. Premier Division Leaders, Fieldside A lost their unbeaten record to a rejuvenated Riley A team. Tony Hicks made a break of 32 in the first frame to begin Riley's account. Hick's break was then upstaged by Paul Robinson who made 44 en route to winning frame two. Gary Cowlin then put Riley's 3-1 ahead with a 58-41, 67-21 win against Bob Chivers. Karl Walker and Ron Reddy contested the final frames. Walker took frame 5 before Reddy came back to win the final frame and with it, the match. In Division Two, top of the table Witney C took on second placed Thame B. Witney were sporting a 100% win record, while Thame had a 100% record of draws! Something was going to give! Mark Syrett got the visitors off to a great start, beating Colin Cutler in the first two frames. Colin Adams and Dave White then contested a poor third frame, which Adams eventually took 58-25. He then went on to win the next frame to level the match. Paul Chester put Witney ahead for the first time in the match with a 66-26 win over Nigel Bossom. He then looked to be on course to win the final frame and maintain Witney's win record, but Bossom produced a 22 clearance at the end of the final frame to clinch yet another draw for Thame. Oracle C bounced back from last week's defeat with an impressive 5:1 win at home to Morris Motors B and maintain top spot in Division Three. Simon Saunders got the home side off to a great start, with an easy win against James Kerr. Saunders was in good form, knocking in a break of 32 in the first frame and a 36 in the second. Jamie Saczak made it 3-0 before Eric Pratt held on the win frame four for Morris's. Richard Saunders took on Chris Martin and made a break of 24 and two of 11 in frame five to guarantee Oracle victory. By contrast, the final frame was scrapy, Saunders eventually stealing it on the black after requiring a snooker with just pink and black on the table. He layed a great snooker which effectively won him the frame. Riley E moved into second place with a 4:2 win against Cowley Con B. Altaf Ali proved too strong for Jim Alder and cruised to a 73-22, 76-9 win and in the process, increased the division's highest break to 39. Wiley old timer, Ken Olive, clawed a frame back for Cowley Con with a 38-22 win over David Lo, but Lo hit back to take the fourth frame 52-12. Brian Mabbutt beat Weifeng (Joe)Zhao 75-28 in the fifth frame only for Zhao to win the final frame and the match for Riley's. Cowley Con C came from behind to beat Morris Motors A and maintain their good start to the season. The early initiative went to the Motor Men, with Des Truss beating Chick Wheatley 51-21, 59-43. Jim Smart (Jnr) showed little mercy to level for Cowley Con. Smart beat Joe Kelly in some style, 66-13, 69-13. Mark Bayless proved to be Cowley's match winner, when he beat Tony Baker 55-33, 74-29. Cherwell B turned in a good performance at Thame D and picked up a much needed win. Peter Astall edged the first frame by 3 points from Toby Todd, but Todd hit back to win frame two. Mark Clifford restored Cherwell's lead winning the third frame by a single point before going on to also claim the fourth frame. Damien Keyte had no trouble against Mick Lomas in the fifth frame to make it 2-3, but Lomas hedl firm in the last to secure a vital win. County C maintained their 100% start to the season with a comfortable win against mid table Ashton B in division four. Kevin Hicks took the first frame to open the scoring for County, but Anthony Marshall soon levelled for Ashton. Nick Anderson beat Kevin Leach to put County 3-1 ahead before M Woodward made it 3-2. The final frame went down to the wire, Paul Paddick eventually winning by 10 points to claim the match for County. Cowley Con D's problematic start to the season continued with defeat at home to Witney D in Division Four. Karl Lewis demolished Andy Keeler in the opening frames and at that point it all looked very promising for the Cowley side. However, from then on nothing went their way. Paul Keenlyside took frame three from Simon Painter 59-37 before sneaking the fourth frame by just 5 points to bring Witney level. Chris Keeler then beat Pete Truby in the fifth frame by an even smaller margin (37-35) to put Witney in front before going on to also win the final frame 61-26. House club A surprised high flying Oracle D to record their first win of the campaign. Tony Nichols defeated Tom Cairns to put the home side 2-0 up. Brian Field extended House Clubs lead by winning the third frame before Dave Hodgson took the fourth frame for Oracle. Matty Bramall beat Tony Smith in frame 5 to reduce the arrears further and set up a tense final frame. However, Smith came good to win the frame and the match. Eynsham B picked up their first win of the season after coming back to beat East Oxford Con B after losing the first two frames. Robbie Barresi beat Alan Wakefield in the first two frames before Jason Stubbs beat Michael Whittington to level the match. Simon Harbour was Eynsham's match winner, taking both frames from league newcomer Patrick Patten. In Division Five, league newcomers, Headington RBL B picked up their first win of the season in a tight encounter with fellow newcomers, New Club B. Indeed, the match could have been won by either side. Paul Moss won the opening frame by a single point from Jason Bonner to give New Club the lead, but Bonner hit back to win frame two. Wayne Montgomery then put the RBL ahead, before Simon Marriott levelled for New Club. Ron Glover and Andy Moss then contested two very close frames with Glover coming out top in both. Eynsham D still await their first win of the season, but managed to force a creditable draw at high flying East Oxford Con A. Gary Washington beat John Ayres 46-13, 56-26 to give the Oxford side a 2-0 lead, before Roy Gascoyne pulled a frame back for Eynsham thanks to a rather one sided 3rd frame against Steve Richards. However, he could not sustain his momentum and Richards came back to win frame four and restore East Oxford's two frame advantage. John Dutton then came to the rescue for Eynsham by winning both frames against John Richards. Littlemore RBL C moved up to second place with a fine 5-1 win against Westcott A. Lee Haggerty and Henry Colver shared the opening frames, but from then on Littlemore assumed control. Leigh Davies had few problems against an out of sorts, Dave Moon. In the last two frames Gavin Murray was pushed all the way by Andy Huxley, but he eventually won 42-39, 65-57.

IMPORTANT NOTE: An issue arose during one of this week’s matches when the cue ball being used was found to be slightly smaller that the rest of the balls in the set. There was also a question mark over the weight of the ball. The issue has been discussed with the club concerned and steps have been taken to rectify the matter. Clubs (and Teams) are reminded that the League Rule 5b requires all clubs to “Make available for play, full size tables which must be in good condition as should the balls and ancillary equipment, all of which should conform to the specifications as laid down by the world governing body”.
