There were several surprises on the opening night of the 2005/6 Oxford & District Billiards League. Division 1 champions County A were defeated 2-1 at home by Thame A and Division 2 champions Fieldside A and runners-up Morris Motors A were both defeated. Fieldside A crashed out 3-0 to Headington Con A while Morris Motors A fell 2-1 to Cowley Con B, both were away matches.

The major surprise must be HCC A's 3-0 win over Fieldside A. Tony Palmer (+100) gave HCC A a fine start by beating Mike Chapman (+100) 100-68. Veteran Terry Walsh (+80) then surprised Paul Robinson (-20) 200-188, despite Paul making a 31 break, to make it 2-0. John Williams (+80) completed the white wash by beating Norman Woodcock (+70) 150-108 with Norman knocking in a 34 break.

At Bicester, the Division 1 champions County A found themselves 2-0 down to Thame A. Mark Syrett (+60) got the first game for Thame A when he beat James Thorpe (scratch) 200-141. Mark made a 29 break and James made a 36. Damien Keyte (+100) then beat the highly talented Olly Hoeblyn (scratch) in a nail biting finish 200-193. Olly was undefeated last season winning eight matches on the trot. He fell at the first hurdle this time despite a 30 break. Jimmy Ewers (scratch) got County their point when he beat Martin Cone (-10) 200-180, Martin making a welcome return to the league after four years.

Cowley Con B were at home to Morris Motors A, beating them 2-1. Brian Mabbutt (+10) game them a great start when he beat Roger Tomlin (+50) 200-174. John Simpson (+40) then beat Doug Baker (+60) to make it 2-0, but Bob Hayward (+60) got the Morris men their point breaking Colin Simpson (+50) 150-136.

Witney A went to Ashton A and beat them 2-1. Chris Warren (+100) beat Pete Fenn (+80) in a close encounter 150-136 to give Witney A the lead. But Keith Maskens (+60) levelled the match beating Mark Warren (+100) in another close encounter 150-141. In the decider Terry Cook (+30) beat Terry Chambers (-10) in yet another cliff hanger 200-191 to give Witney A victory.

Thame B entertained Cowley Con A and beat them 2-1 despite losing the opening game when Dick Hashman (-20) beat Pete Hawkes (+110) 200-161, with Dick knocking in 38 and 27 breaks. Tom Fletcher (+80) levelled the match beating Arthur Coakley (+90) 150-102 and Nigel Bossom won the match for Thame B by beating Keith Pearce (+60) 150-118.

Eynsham A were at home to Oracle A and took the opening game when Michael McCluskey (+90) beat Ted Milsom (+50) 150-120. Richard Connerty (+80) levelled the match beating Ken Leach (+90) 150-109 and then Jack Woods (+90) won the match for Oracle by beating Roy Gascoyne (+110) in a desperate finish 150-144.

The highest breaks this week were by Dick Hashman (Cowley Con A) 38, James Thorpe (County A) 36, Martin Cone (Thame A) 34, Norman Woodcock (Fieldside A) 34, Paul Robinson (Fieldside A) 31 and Olly Hoeblyn (County A) 30. Mark Syrett of Thame A also made a 29.
